Black Eyed Sue in Clear Vase

Original: Private Collection

A variety of blues and greens in energetic strokes comprise most of this piece. You can see the acrylic underpainting on the right almost looking like a little rainstorm in the corner. The linear movement of the petals and the yellow and white highlights in the lower vase echo in the blue and purple stripes.

The bloom is a joyous burst of sunny yellow in a sea of watery blue. This painting shows why working from life can be better than painting from photos. Enabling me to see a variety of color in the shadows, it forced me to paint fast and free.
