Working on portraits is my first art love because of the challenge. I start with nothing but lines, tones, and sometimes patches of color. The beginning seems formidable, but then there is that magical feeling when suddenly I can see that person on the canvas or paper in front of me. There is no landscape that will give me that “aha” of recognition.

 

This is the oil study I did to practice for “Mother and Daughter.” I like it for its freshness and clear blue color. I believe I captured Hannah's sweet features and spirit with a painterly informality.
