I don’t believe I could have drawn “Looking Back” from a photograph. When the model is in front of me, I can see her in the round and choose how light and shade drape themselves over those forms. Drawing the figure from life is an active sport, requiring intense observation and speed. You can see the evidence of where I was looking for the forms before delineating a decisive line. The core shadows (the darkest edge of shade next to the light) are a feature especially in the V shape of the hip.
