Lurcher

Original: NFS

I once saw a bright orange painting of a dog running by Dr. Brent Green of Abilene Christian University. I instantly loved it, and I don’t even like orange. It was a combination of a real identifiable subject that was moving in an abstract space. The dog was somehow connected to the abstract design. I was incredulous as to how he had made the composition work in that way. It has been the inspiration for the running dog paintings that I have done so far.

I love animals and dogs in particular. A lurcher is not a purebred dog, but rather a cross between a sighthound and another dogbreed in order to improve the sighthound’s ability in an area such as intelligence or speed.

An animal running often represents freedom for me and I tried to portray the energy of this lurcher’s speed with the abstract shapes and furious scribbling. The lurcher is a mixed breed like us. We are a mix of spirit and matter trying to find freedom.
