Tragic Rose

Original: Private Collection

This picture was meant as a sort of puzzle for the viewer to put together visually. The image is broken up into squares or panes, some of which contain clues as to what the central image is. For example, the two numbers in the top left corner make a 12 for a dozen roses. There are clues in the other panes as well.

While I was painting the design, I had a sense that the rose was suffering somehow by being divided that way. I feel like the rose represents the original garden of creation and how it is now in pain. We are built on some kind of loom of God, at once aching and intensely beautiful.
